Invest In Alternative Assets With A Self-Directed IRA

Proud to be Teaming up with Equity Trust Institutional Services

AgroNosotros has teamed up with Equity Trust Institutional Services to better assist our US clients with their SD-IRA needs.

With 50 years in Financial Services, $52 Billion in Assets under Custody and Administration and voted as the Best Self-Directed IRA for Private Equity in 2023 -24 by Forbes, they have the experience and expertise we are looking for to take care of our clients.

As we explained in our recent newsletter, clients can once again use their SD-IRA, 401k, eQRP and a wide variety of retirement plans to diversify their portfolio and participate in our current coffee and cacao farmland opportunities.

Many believe (and we agree) that IRA/retirement funds are a perfect fit for long-term planning and investing like sustainable agriculture. But not everyone knows that they can access and use their retirement funds for these types of exciting opportunities and instead, they leave their funds with a broker in a boring, underperforming mutual fund.

Others know it's possible but don't know how. Or, they don't want to deal with the paperwork and hassle of transferring or rolling over their current plan into a Self-Directed IRA to make it happen. They are often afraid to make a mistake and as a result, they don't take action.

This is where Equity Trust Institutional Services and its team of advisors step in.

What Makes An IRA Self-Directed?

When an IRA is referred to as a self-directed account, it simply means you can use the account to invest in areas outside of traditional stocks and bonds. That’s the primary difference between a self-directed and traditional retirement account — where you put those investment dollars.

With a self-directed IRA or 401(k), you can invest in a variety of areas, including real estate. Real estate can be a profitable, rewarding way to grow your self-directed account and potentially help you achieve your dreams faster.

What is the investment process using a retirement account?

It's a simple three-step process:

  1. Open the Self-Directed IRA account with Equity Institutional Services
  2. Fund the account by transfer, rollover, or contribution
  3. Work with a dedicated representative with Equity Trust to fund your investment

Frequently Asked Questions:

If you want to invest, you open your account and move funds from your current custodian to us. We make this process as smooth and easy as we can. Once we have the funds, you instruct us to invest on behalf of your IRA.
That depends on where your IRA is located currently. You need a custodian who handles self-directed IRA accounts. Brokerage houses are set up to accommodate products they know and sell. Alternative assets usually fall outside their scope because of the different procedures and documentation involved.
The unique thing about us is that we have a flat fee schedule which can be found here. In broad strokes, there is a $50 fee to open the account and an annual fee of $325. What many investors appreciate about this fee schedule is that, as the value of the investment increases, fees remain flat whereas traditional fee schedules often take a percentage of the value of the account.

We do not give tax, legal, or financial advice. Our role is that of an administrator and custodian.
You must begin taking withdrawals from your tax-deferred retirement savings account such as your Traditional IRA, SEP IRA, and SIMPLE IRA, when you reach a specified age. For many years, this age was 70 ½. The age was adjusted to 72 under the SECURE Act in 2020, and then more recently adjusted under the SECURE Act 2.0 in 2023. If you turn 72 after December 31, 2022, the RMD age is 73. In 2033, the RMD age will move to 75. (Roth IRAs do not require a distribution during the account owner’s lifetime.) An account holder’s first Required Minimum Distribution must be taken by April 1 of the year following when the account owner turns 73; this is known as the “required beginning date.” Each year thereafter, the distribution must be taken by December 31.
Yes, you can calculate the RMD for each tax-deferred account and then satisfy your entire RMD from just one or a combination of accounts. This is particularly important or helpful for investors who hold illiquidalternative investments.
